“The Goal is to Become a Lawyer…”

dream come true

Law school may be a jealous mistress but at the end of the day, I find myself happy with her.
There are days when I just want to give up and run away. Sometimes, I wish I could just drop everything and pursue another dream like traveling to different places or writing my own book. No matter what I do, I always find myself coming back to law school. It amazes me how I wake up every single day feeling excited with school and everything related to it. Even if I haven’t read the assigned cases or provisions, I still look forward to attending my classes. Is it because of my supportive classmates, sweet org mates or super-strict-yet-highly-inspiring professors? Or simply because I want to become a lawyer? Well, whatever the reason is I’m glad that I’m still here.

Now that another semester is about to end, some of my teachers have started giving their farewell talks. Since I love quoting people who have made an impact in my life, let me share to you what my professor in a political law subject said:

“We all have one goal in this class and that is to become a lawyer. That’s the natural course or trajectory of our ambition to become a lawyer. But remember that becoming a lawyer is not a competition. Some people may become lawyer faster than us but with our determination and courage, maybe one day we will become a lawyer. Some of my classmates became a lawyer ahead of me. Some of them became lawyers later than me. But now that we have become lawyers, it does not really measure our respective selves.

Becoming a lawyer is not the end-all of our existence. If it is really your dream, then you have to pursue it. Then if in the middle of the road, you feel like it’s not, then reflect because there is so much more that the world can offer you. If you are going to force yourself, even if it’s not for you, then maybe you are just wasting your life.

So, I wish everyone good luck. I hope many of you will become lawyer. I will not say “all.” Imagine, there are 5 sections but only 40 students will take the bar. But I sincerely wish the best for all of you. Take the final exam. Take a chance in the last exam. Who knows? The Supreme Court also lowers their passing average, so I might also do that. *laughs*

Take the chance of taking the exam. That’s my honest and sincere advice to everyone. Thank you.”

If there is one thing I learned from his words, it is to know what I really want. After spending almost eighteen months in Ateneo College of Law, I can say that being “here” is a life-long dream slowly coming true. So, I’m going to stay here as long as I can take it. I will do better and make things happen. He also made me realized that being in law school does not mean staging a competition. Yes, it is true that some of my friends will become lawyers ahead of me while some may become lawyers later than me. It is not something to be sad about. They can take two, three or more steps ahead of me.

What matters is, just like them, I’m going to become a lawyer soon. When? Well, no one knows. All I know is that I am in a place where I always wanted to be. I just want to continue my relationship with the jealous mistress because I know it will be worth it.

I had the ambitious before to be a lawyer, however, due to a financial reason i decided to pursue something that is more on technology, i believe to be a lawyer is very difficult and you should have your own dignity in order to be a succesful one.

This is a nice thought. It is my dream to become a lawyer, and now I am on my second year in law school. When stress and pressures come along, I'm thinking of taking a detour. But this is my dream. I will do everything I can to live that dream.

Finals is coming! God bless us. 🙂
