Disney’s Live Action Mulan: “Embrace Your Chi”

Today, I watched Mulan, and my heart is full. It’s such a beautiful movie, although I wished there were more songs on it. Well, you know me, I’m not a cinematographer, so I really cannot comment on technical parts of the film. Instead, allow me to talk about how it made me smile today. The truth is that this post has really no direction. I just wanted to remember this moment as the day I watched Mulan.

One of the things that I like about the movie is how it emphasized the importance of embracing one’s chi.

No one should hide her chi, just because she is afraid of going against the norms or what other people may say. Instead, a person must learn how to show and share her unique energy with the world. Nothing should stop her from letting it out. Be comfortable in sharing the force coming from within yourself. Never let anyone or anything prevent you from doing it. Life is too short to limit yourself.

It’s also amazing how the movie focused on the three important virtues of Bravery, Loyalty, and Truth.

We all know how challenging it is to stay brave, loyal, and truthful during these days. It is human nature always to want things to happen according to how we want it to be. As such, a lot of us are willing to go against these virtues just to get what we think we deserve.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that I’ve never been cowardly, disloyal, and untruthful. It’s embarrassing to admit, but there were times when I felt I needed to retreat or surrender, to turn my back on people who expected me to be loyal and to even lie to others. Those were definitely not my proud moments. But I am constantly trying and improving to become a better version of myself. It is not an easy thing to do, but I am happy to be living a life where I have become a little more brave, loyal, and truthful than I was before.

This is why I love how Mulan emphasized the said three virtues. The film is an excellent reminder for all of us that no matter what situation we are in or how inconvenient it may be for us, we should strive hard to continue the fight we’ve started, to be loyal in whatever we do, and to tell the truth.

Lastly, “Mulan” also focused on the importance of devotion to one’s family. It’s the fourth virtue that was embedded in the sword given by the Imperial Majesty to Mulan at the end of the film. It was just a short scene, but it meant a lot for someone like me who is deeply devoted to my family. I have always been grateful for my life to my parents, as well as my little achievements to my brother.

And yes, that’s it. I have nothing more to add.

I want to end this post with this:

I hope that we can harness our inner chi and use it to have a positive impact on everyone around us.
